It's a trap!!

Hold up a real trap.  This could be a large rat trap or any kind thereof.  Ask, "How is drug abuse like a trap?"  It may be easy enough to get into, but it will be a lot harder to get out of.  Suppose you were walking along, just minding your own business, and put your foot in a trap.  After stepping in the trap, would you be aware of it?  How?  You would feel the pain of the trap snapping shut, and also the pain of trying to slide you foot out.  Do you think there would be any lingering pain after your foot was removed?  Probably.  The pain wouldn't go away completely until you could get your circulation going and some of the bruising had gone away.

Which do you think would be smarter and easier, taking care of yourself after the trap (drug abuse) clamps down on you, or just watching the direction you're headed so that you can detect the trap and step completely around it?  Staying out of the trap all together.  You can stay on the trail, move faster, and not spend extra time removing yourself from the pain of the trap.
