The Book of Mormon is the word of God
and is another testament of Jesus Christ
by Melanie Day

Show the children the gift-wrapped Book of Mormon.

•     Why do we give gifts?

•     How do you feel when someone enjoys a gift you have given?

Explain that because of Heavenly Father’s great love for us he has given us a gift to help us achieve eternal life. This gift has an important message for each of us. It teaches us about our Savior, Jesus Christ, and how to live so we can return to Heavenly Father. Ezra Taft Benson, the thirteenth President of the Church, said: “This is a gift of greater value to mankind than even the many wonderful advances we have seen in modern medicine. It is of greater worth to mankind than the development of flight or space travel” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1986, p. 3; or Ensign, Nov. 1986, p. 4).

•     What do you think this gift is?

Have the children help unwrap the gift. Testify of how studying the Book of Mormon has blessed your life and helped you become more like the Savior.

SING: Search, Ponder and Pray

ACTIVITY - Have five men dress up as characters from the Book of Mormon: Abinadi, Samuel, Alma, Nephi and Ammon. Have them recount a story (2 to 3 minutes) about what they were "famous" for and the kids the children then guess who they were supposed to be. As each prophet is guessed correctly, sing their verse of Follow the Prophet and then go to the next one.

Samuel
was a prophet who stood upon a wall

Told to teach the Nephites, repentance was his call

He told them Christ would come soon, born in Bethlehem

Samuel knew the signs and told all this to them.

Nephi was a prophet chosen by the Lord

Told to get the brass plates using Laban's sword

He knew he would do right by the Lord's command

The plates would teach the Nephites of the Gospel Plan.

Abinadi the prophet stood before the king

A message of repentance he did surely bring

King Noah became angry and called his guards to kill

They couldn't touch the prophet 'til he'd finished the Lord's will.

Ammon was a prophet, called to serve a King

Fearlessly he guarded the sheep with sword and sling

Lamoni thought that Ammon might a spirit be,

Ammon replied, "No, I just want to teach thee."

Alma was a prophet, who heard Abinadi

The only man who listened before the prophet died.

He fled to the forest, teaching many souls

Two hundred were baptized in the waters cold.

GAME:  Book of Mormon Scripture-Story Grab Bag from the February 2000 Friend

To play this scripture-story game, glue each word onto lightweight cardboard; let dry. Cut them out and put them into a small, sturdy bag. Have the first player pick one card from the grab bag, without peeking, and tell which Book of Mormon story the card reminds him or her of. There are no “wrong” answers, but the player must explain why the card reminds him or her of that story. For example, the TEACHER card might remind you of Alma the younger, Ammon, or Amulek as missionaries; Nephi teaching his brothers; or of something else. If the player can’t think of a story, the other players may help. If no one can think of a story, look up the card’s word in the Index at the back of the Book of Mormon and find a story about it.

2.  Discuss and help the children memorize the following statement from the Prophet Joseph Smith:

“I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book” (Introduction, paragraph 6).
