Cheez Whiz Object Lesson
by Terri Finney

You will need:

  • drawing of a child (simple outline of works) , laminated or in plastic sheet protector

  • cheez whiz, peanut butter or something else messy

  • paper towel labeled BAPTISM

  • paper towel labeled SACRAMENT

When we begin our mortal life, we are pure and free from sin. (hold up drawing) But because we are mortal, we sometimes make mistakes or sin along the way. We might:

  • tell a white lie, "no mom I didn't eat a cookie" (smear of cheese whiz on child)

  • say something mean to your brother  (add another smear of cheese whiz)

  • use something that belongs to one of your older sisters without asking even though she has asked you not to use it (add another smear of cheese whiz)

This cheese whiz represent our sins. We are no longer clean and pure. If we repent of our sins and have faith in Jesus Christ, we can be baptized. (Clean picture of child with cloth marked BAPTISM) Through baptism our sins are washed away and we are made clean and pure again because of the atonement of our Savior. (Hold up picture to show that child is clean again)

At our baptism, we covenant with Heavenly Father to keep his commandments and to take upon us the name of Jesus Christ. This means we promise to live our life in a way that would make Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ happy. We promise to stay clean. Sometimes, though, we make wrong choices and are not as clean and pure as we were at our baptism.   Give example of sin (add more cheese whiz).

Our Heavenly Father knew that this would happen.  He does not expect us to be perfect, he just expects us to try and to repent and ask Heavenly Father for forgiveness when we make a mistake.  If we sincerely repent, we can partake of the sacrament and renew our baptismal covenants with Heavenly Father. We will be clean and pure again.

(Use cloth marked SACRAMENT to clean picture).  Every Sunday we are given the opportunity through the sacrament to renew our covenants - promising to keep our lives clean and pure. We should try every day to choose the right and keep our lives free from sin.
