Because of
the Atonement, I can
repent and return to live with Heavenly
Father and Jesus
by Melanie
Day

Ask: "What is the second principle
of the gospel, listed in the fourth article of faith?" If you said “Repentance,”
you are right!" Repentance is turning from doing wrong to doing right. The
Savior wants you to turn away from wrong and turn to Him. He gave His life
to pay for your sins so that if you repent, you can be forgiven and be clean
again. Ask, "What is sin?"
OBJECT LESSON: Demonstrate what sin is
by doing the following object lesson:
Sin Spoils.
Game:
The Fishers of Men, Fishing Game
- (Idea is by
Ann Givens and Lois
Peterman) Use this game to teach ways we can be missionaries and when we are truly
converted and repent, we are made clean inside and out instead of ways we
sin.
Set-Up: Using old plastic milk jugs, cut out fish that are
about 4-6" long. They need to be long enough to write the various sins on.
There are some special problems to think about when making this activity.
Since the fish are cut outs they will be tall and very thin. When you lay
the fish down, one side of the fish will become the top (visible) side and
the other side will become the bottom (hidden) side. Most inks do not stick to plastic very well. Those are the inks that
you use for writing a sin on the bottom (hidden) side of each fish. So in
order to color the fish you need to find a marker or paint that is
especially made to mark on plastic. Only color the fish on the top (visible)
side. You may run into a problem if you color the bottom and then write a
sin in another color over the base color. Especially, if you then try to
wash the sin off of the fish.
After each fish is colored and a wash-off-able sin is written on the bottom
side of each fish, put a standard metal (not plastic) paper clip on its
mouth. When you are done, only the sin should wash off. The fishing pole is made with a stick or dowel. Cut a piece of string
to a length appropriate for the size kids in the class. Tie a string to one
end of the stick, and tie a magnet to the other end of the string. To get a
free magnet, go to your local electric motor repair shop. They always have
an old junk motor they can take a magnet out of. Test your activity to
insure that you have a big enough magnet.
How to Play: Each fish (laying on
the floor) has the name of a sin on the bottom side so that the fishers can
not see any of the sins. This is because, as a fisher of men we
find that, most people hide their sins, but Heavenly Father knows everything. After the
fish is caught, have the child wash it clean and put it back into the water (a pan of water). And this is
like the people that have heard and received the gospel. They are washed clean
through the atonement and baptism. We can repent when we make wrong
choices.
MEMORIZE:
Help
the children memorize the fourth article of faith. Write it in phrases on
separate slips of paper; give each class a phrase to memorize, with younger
classes getting the simpler phrases. Have each teacher help her or his class
learn its phrase. Ask a member of each class to come to the
front and present its phrase. While the entire Primary says the fourth
article of faith, have the class representatives quickly but reverently put
themselves in the correct order. Then have them repeat their phrases in
order for the rest of the children. Repeat this process until all the
children who wish to have participated and the article is memorized.
SING:
The Fourth Article of
Faith, pg. 124.
Review the fourth article of
faith by having each class stand when its phrase is sung.
SUMMARY: You will
need to repent many times throughout your life. As you turn away from wrong
and try to do what is right, you will grow closer and closer to Heavenly
Father and Jesus Christ. The Lord has promised that if you repent, He
will bless you and remember your wrongs no more. Share your testimony
of repentance.
OTHER Optional Activities:
- Read the story from the Friend called, "The
Atonement". It has flannel board cutouts that go along
with the story.
-
Clean Again
-
Have the Primary presidency and
music leader work together for this Sharing Time. Sing “I’m Trying to Be
Like Jesus (Children’s Songbook, p. 78). Read “The
Horsehair Rope,” Part 1 (Friend, Jan. 1994, pp. 16–19). Sing
“Help Me, Dear Father” (Children’s Songbook, p. 99). Read “The
Horsehair Rope,” Part 2 (Friend, Feb. 1994, pp. 44–47). Sing
“Repentance” (Children’s Songbook, p. 98). Read “The
Horsehair Rope,” Conclusion (Friend, Mar. 1994, pp. 26–29).
Tell the children that as we try to be like Jesus and as we repent when we
do something wrong, we will feel our Savior’s love. Sing “I Feel My Savior’s
Love” (Children’s Songbook, p. 74). (This
idea is taken from April 1997 Friend)
