We talked about the Word of Wisdom
and I used the suggestion from the
Manual 5 about the snare. I made a
snare and let them all get their finger caught. That was a great visual.
We read section 89 together and talked about each paragraph. Then I had
made a sheet for them to do....I wrote down different paragraphs of the
Word of Wisdom and they had to look them up and write down what it was
talking about.....coffee, cigarettes, alcohol...and put a smiley face of
good or bad.

I purchased an inexpensive plant for each
girl. I had listed on the paper different ways to care for the plant,
such as - water daily, water as needed, water with fertilizer daily,
keep out of sunlight but water as needed, don't water, water with a
bleach water mixture. I sent the girls home with the plants after
talking to them about how different foods and chemicals help and hurt
our bodies. The results were amazing. My daughter drew the card of
"Water with a bleach/water mixture" (I provided this as well as the
fertilizer mixture) and after 2 waters the plant was dead. The
girls were all amazed at how the plants grew or suffered depending on
how the plants were fed. It was one of the most productive meetings we
had had in a long time.

Using masking tape, mark off an area on the floor in a large triangle.
Then use the tape to mark off sections of the triangle to create the
Food Guide Pyramid. You can find this in lots of places, including many
cereal boxes. When the girls arrive, depending on what month you
are going to do this activity, have a short lesson to begin. It can be
on the Word of Wisdom or on general nutrition and why it is important,
whatever will fit your theme. After the lesson, pass out things
the girls can cut pictures of food from without telling them what you
are going to do with them. You can use cooking magazines, grocery ads
(those are excellent sources), whatever you don't mind them cutting up.
Once they are finished, go around the circle several times having each
girl put a food in its proper place on the pyramid. Be sure to discuss
how many servings of each kind of food are recommended as well as how
much of a certain food constitutes a serving. For example, a sandwich
has two slices of bread but each slice counts as a serving.

Why it's important
We decided to do "The Word of Wisdom and Smoothies" - we
always hear about what "not to do" - so this time we decided to talk
about the "do's". We had 4 different types of smoothies (recipes
came from the internet), veggie tray and wraps. While the girls munched
on the "healthy" stuff we talked about how the word of wisdom came
about, how it was "ahead of its time" - how people are just now catching
up to what's good for them, etc... We talked about our health and why it
is important to stay healthy, etc.. We did touch on the "do not's" - but
our focus was more of what should we do. It was so much fun trying the
different smoothies and just talking about all the fun things you can do
to take care of our bodies while we have them! (Idea by
Aislinn Barnes)
I thought I would make a little mystery
bag or box and put a few items relating to grooming, nutrition, and the
word of wisdom (ex: hair ties, comb, bar of soap, piece of fruit,
toothbrush, make-up item, etc). Then have each girl feel around
inside for 5 seconds. After everyone has had a turn I would then ask the
girls to pair up and discuss together what they found and think of a
title or objective for the lesson. (Idea by Rachelle)
Food Pyramid
Word of Wisdom for a month
Have a lesson on the Food Pyramid, this
can be related to the Word of Wisdom. When I did this activity I had
each girl write out exactly what they had eaten for the day and then we
reviewed each girls food intake for the day and made suggestions on
where they could eat more fruits etc. I have 15 girls and this worked
perfect. (Idea by Monica Dixon)
If possible, have the girls each bring 50
cents or $1 to an activity. Go to the grocery store and there the girls
will have to purchase an item of food for a 'dinner party'. The girls
cannot put their money together. Have them try and find foods listed in
the Word of Wisdom or on the food pyramid. Give the girls a time limit.
Take the food back and prepare a dinner, using the items they purchased.
It's a fun way to see what little money will buy, and to teach them the
value of food. (In the past, we have had people purchase fruit, yogurts
to dip fruit into, eggs, carrots, ramen noodles, simple foods that are
made into something they enjoy. (Idea by Lorena Brown)
