Why it's important
Idea by Deanna Holdsworth
I did the lesson centered on the
Word of Wisdom so we read that section out of the D&C and we talked a lot
about why the Word of Wisdom is so important. I was hoping to do the food
pyramid charts and have the girls glue on the different foods but no
matter how hard I looked I couldn't find magazines or such that had each
of the different foods or if I did find things I couldn't find enough. So,
I contacted my local health department and asked if they had anything with
the food pyramid on it and they said they had some nice color handouts and
nutritional things geared towards the ages of my girls.
So, I got those and they were wonderful!! I wound up only getting handouts
for the girls and not any for myself or the other leader and I wished I
had gotten them for us too because they were great. I handed them out to
the girls and we discussed the food pyramid and it went really, really
well. They didn't see how they could eat all of the recommended food
servings but when we started to discuss all the different types of food
they eat they quickly understood that they do eat better than they
thought. I bought some fresh fruit and had it all cut up into bowls such
as strawberries, bananas, pineapple etc. it looked so beautiful sitting on
the table in the bowls . I had the girls line up and help themselves. I
thought if there was any left I would make fruit salad for my family that
night. Do you know, those girls ate every last bite of everything I had
out!!! They gobbled up the fruit and there wasn't anything left. I thought
the lesson went very, very well.
We did a lot of talking but the girls stayed connected and they didn't
tune out. I even had something for them to color, a pretty picture of a
fruit bowl I got out of a family home evening idea book and I put a
scripture quote on it. I was going to have the girls color in the picture
for fun but we spent so much time talking and sharing that there wasn't
time so I had them take it home to color it. I really fussed over this
lesson because it was simpler in nature in the respect that I didn't have
anything for the girls to actually do with their hands except for the
picture to color but you know it turned out so well and I really believe
it's because the lesson was based on the scriptures and the spirit was
there and that's all that really matters.
