Word of Wisdom for a month

I spent the whole month on nutrition. (That's when we had the old program, but this could still fit under learning and living the gospel) We first began with a discussion on the Word of Wisdom, actually reading from the D& C 89 and discussing what things meant. We went on and talked about the food pyramid and I taught them how to read food labels.  We talked about serving sizes, calories, fat calories, salt, etc.

The Cub Scout Webelos book, pg. 73 is an excellent resource for this. I copied that page for every girl and we went over it. We did some other activities too like sorted pictures of food that I had cut out from magazines into the correct food groups. Each girl made up their "dream menu" for a day, making sure that they followed the guidelines of the food pyramid.

Our final mtg. was a Supermarket "Smart Eating" Scavenger Hunt at our local grocery store. The girls were divided into small groups of about 3-4 with a leader or parent with each group. They had a list of things that they were supposed to find in the store.  I made the list up by going into the store earlier in the week and looking at product labels and writing questions to help them compare labels and identify the product.

For example-- On Aisle # 14- I'm on a salt-free diet. Which 8 oz. can of tomato sauce should I buy to use in my meal? (The group then had to write down the brand) I tried to make sure that there would be only one correct answer. Or here is another one-- Aisle#6 I have to be careful about how much sugar I eat. Should I drink Mott's Apple Juice or Gatorade? (Hint- look on the label for grams of sugar per serving)

The girls really seemed to have fun with the scavenger hunt. They learned a lot, and I must admit I did too. I paid more attention to what I bought for my own family after that.  Their individual leaders wrote the time they finished the hunt on their paper, so we could know who the winning group was. Although winners were really not necessary. I also gave the group leader $3.00 each and told the group they were supposed to purchase a healthy snack to share back at the church with everyone. The hitch was the snack had to have less than 50 fat calories in it. It was fun to see what they came up with and the girls all enjoyed the snacks. We discussed the results of our hunt as we ate the snacks.  Some of the results were surprising. We meet for an hour and a half, so we were able to just finish this activity up in that time.
