EZ Defense
Spiritual and Physical Defense. I did this the year that Brooke Wilburger (A BYU
Co-ed who was kidnapped and never found) went missing. I felt very strongly the
girls needed to learn how to defend themselves. I asked a member of the Stake
Presidency to talk on Spiritual
defense. He brought visual aids...
Kevlar gloves to protect hands - but prayer works as well.
Goggles to protect eyes - and we need to be aware of what we watch. Read good
books. Ear plugs to protect ears - remember what music and talk you hear will
still go in, unless you block it out by not being there.
Steel toed boots to protect the feet - run away from that which is evil.
I invited a Taekwondo 5th Degree Black Belt Instructor to teach the girls self
defense - complete with bags to kick and punch, and helpers to direct the girls
how to kick properly and to say NO! in a big way. He brought in a packet of
helpful hints for the parents to go over with the kids. Much like "Stranger
Danger Awareness". I also handed out Child ID cards for the parents to put all
helpful info on along with a place for a lock of hair to be taped on. Was very
powerful.
"A PJ'S" Activity
Each letter corresponds with the classes held. The Stake President's wife spoke
on how each of these principles makes a great foundation for life and a
spiritual well being. The girls wore their modest PJ's as well, to make it
really fun.
A= Articles of Faith. Learning the key words and pictures. Game (from the
Friend) was handed out.
P=Prayer - How to properly pray and what to ask for. Included making a door sign
to remind to pray before leaving the bedroom and when you enter to go to bed at
night.
J=Journals - What the journals are for, complete with questions to answer in the
journals, and journals and pens to take home to start.
S=Scriptures. How to look up scriptures from the topical guide and
cross-reference. They sang the song "Scripture Power" as well, as that was one
of the Sacrament Meeting songs that year.
"We Are a Happy Family"
- Making a FHE kit of the First Vision
- FHE treats with recipe booklet (recipes from The Friend)
- Working together we can work it out - cooperation in a family.
- My husband and I made a pair of wooden skis to walk with 5 people on the skis
at a time.
- Flyswatting 101 - leading music for FHE.
- We Are Daughters of our Heavenly Father - making crowns with beads and
streamers from the previous Achievement Days program and know that we are royal
princesses of Deity.
