What a
Character
Idea by Cheri Benavides
Earlier in the year the girls had a few assignments that
all tied together. We went to the public library and then they
were to 1) learn about a famous author and study their life and read
or listen to one of their works and do a short report on it. 2) Find
out about schools in another country ( my daughter wrote my sister
serving a mission in Portugal). So going along with this we
entitled our awards night as "What a Character". They dressed up
as a character in the book they read. And for a refreshment the girls
brought something that had to do with the time (era) of their author
or the book they had read. And as a program the girls read their
reports about the author or book and told about who they had dressed
as and read their report on the school in another country. In the
middle of this we gave out the awards. It gave these girls all a
chance to have their night to "shine". All of the girls that
participated that night were all home schooled so it also gave them a
chance to do something that they normally don't get to. As an
example of what they had done I'll share what my daughter did!
Her author was Laura Ingalls Wilder. So, she dressed as her. Gave a
report on her life. She had printed off of the computer pictures of
her different homes, made a pioneer wagon with a Barbie car, and
dressed up her different sized Barbie's as the Ingalls family. For
her part for refreshments she shared homemade wheat bread, dill
pickles. I think that by having a program and the girls sharing what
they have done is a good way to have the parents involved. I also
tell the audience about the activities and service projects we have
done since out last recognition night. We invite the families,
primary presidency, and branch presidency and anyone else that we
know that is interested in what the girls are doing!
