Scripture Heroes Night
Idea by Kristen Hudson

One night that sticks out to me is when we did a "Scripture Hero's" night. I told the girls to come prepared with a brief story about somebody in the scriptures whom they loved as a scripture hero. Could be anybody. I, myself, searched the scriptures and came up with 3 people whom I especially enjoyed from the scriptures, but who were a bit more obscure--thus leaving the obvious ones for the young girls to talk about themselves. I started off the evening telling the stories about my choices in a very fun, story like fashion and explained the attribute(s) that inspired such a love of these people to me. That set the mood. Even though only about half the girls actually came prepared, those who hadn't prepared ahead of time were so moved by what we were sharing, they came up with people all on their own at the moment when their turn came. Many of the girls took notes in their journals (just a simple AD spiral notebook we give them to bring each week and write down thoughts if they feel they wish to). I think only one girl opted to "skip," but then ended up sharing at the end anyways. I find with my group, the more the girls are allowed to speak and share their own thoughts and experiences, the more they love the activity. It was spiritual and FUN all at the same time. We laughed about some of our hero's predicaments, marveled at their choices, and found much to admire. I think the KEY is to guide them in their thoughts--which is why I started first--and then it is amazing what they will come up with. Ending with a yummy treat was also a hit!
