Bloom where you are planted

We started the evening off with the dads and daughters coming in "nice casual dress".   When they came in, they each chose a note card and took a program that asked them to take a few moments and write a special note to their dad/daughter about a favorite memory, qualities they love about their dad/daughter, etc. The primary president was playing music as people arrived.

We decorated the cultural hall with the theme Bloom Where You Are Planted written in large letters in the front, surrounded by flower garlands which served as our backdrop for photos later. We also had fresh flowers in vases, and tissue paper "gardens" up on the wall, with tissue paper flowers as centerpieces of each table. The tissue paper flowers were made by the girls at a previous activity.

After the notes were written, our primary counselor introduced the theme and encouraged the girls to build their testimonies as their "roots". We then had a member of the bishopric talk to everyone about our earthly and Heavenly Fathers and how they love us and want to help us "grow."

After this talk, we passed out a coloring page (Mary Ross) of "Bloom Where You Are Planted" - click here to purchase this book from Deseret Book for .99) and had the dad/daughter teams work on that while each table came up and the dads picked out a fresh rose for their daughter. After each dad/daughter team got a rose, we took a picture of them in front of the backdrop which we will decorate frames for at the next activity. (If you want the idea of the flower frame, let me know and I'll send it to you.) Following the picture taken, they went by the recognition table which just had pictures and props and other items we'd made in the past year on display.

After each table had colored the picture/had their picture taken... we went onto have waltz instruction. Our primary president (gotta love her) played a slow waltz on the piano as one of the activity day instructors showed them how to do the waltz, complete with foot diagram in the front for all to see. As the dad/daughter teams were doing waltz instruction, we passed out the dessert.

The dessert was gumdrop flowers, which the girls also made. You press one large gumdrop flat in between wax paper, then cut around the edges to make petals.  You then take a smaller gumdrop, cut it in half, and paste one half of the smaller gumdrop onto the center of the larger gumdrop to make the center of the flower. You complete the flower by putting it on top of a toothpick and adding a spearmint gumdrop leaf.  These "flowers" are then placed into ice cream cone cupcakes that are chocolate with chocolate frosting and green sprinkles on the top. (Got the idea from the side of the Pillsbury Devil's Food cake box.)  We also had sherbert/sprite punch.
