Activity Day Ideas...from the Friend
 by Tasha Reeves / ga08302007

For anyone looking for fresh and inspirational activities, remember
you can always turn to the current Friend magazine.
  Here are some examples of
activities I came up with using the
September 2007 Friend Magazine

A Cheesy Activity - Make all the cheese recipes on page 48. Tell lots of Cheesy jokes and make a cheesy craft (scroll down to bottom of page and you'll see "Cheese Template"!!  Or see who can make the best grilled cheese sandwich! Talk about slang words like Cheesy and why we use them or shouldn't use them. Tell the girls that this will be the only Cheesy activity they have to do this year!!!  And don't forget to have the girls "Say Cheese!" as you take a group picture of them.

Friend First Aid - Read this cute message on the inside front cover.  Talk about ways the Friend Magazine can bring spiritual first aid for the girls when things are tough for them and pick out some favorite articles to discuss. Make spiritual first aid kits with the girls for keeping in their lockers or backpacks.  Be sure to take one to each of your less active girls too.

Service Activity - Miles and Miles of Smiles talks about how we can share the love of Christ in simple acts of kindness. The next article is a poem entitled "Share Gods Love". Read the article with the girls and then use the poem as their instructions for a fun service activity. They need to complete everything mentioned in the poem during the activity.  (My suggestions are in the brackets)

Spread a smile,
Give a hug.
Share a toy
Without a tug. (Take some gently used or new toys to a young family in the ward)
Give a flower (Take a flower or plant to an elder sister or brother in the ward)
Blow a kiss
Make a card
For one you miss (drop off some Hershey's Hugs and Kisses and a card for your less active girls)
Shake a rattle
For the baby
Be a friend
Don't say maybe
Whether you are
Small or Tall
Share Gods love
With one and all.

At the end of the activity gather together and talk about how the girls feel after doing your service activity and remind them that simple acts of kindness can make a huge difference. Take a picture of the girls during the activity for them to put in their journals as reminders.  You could also send
the girls home with a smiley face to put on their mirrors to remind them of the small acts of service they do each day.

Sacred Ground Activity - Read the article "Sacred Ground" and teach the girls about people who have physical or mental disabilities. Teach them how special each child
of God is. Teach them how to talk and associate with people that have disabilities. Is there someone you can have as a guest speaker to talk about this? Is there anyone in your primary that has a disability that the girls can learn more about and help that child feel even more accepted in Primary? (You can come up with so many more ideas for this activity)

What's the Difference Activity - Read the article "What's the Difference" and have a cultural evening with the girls. They will all have come from different backgrounds and
cultures. Spend the activity recognizing and appreciating each others differences.

All Clean - One of their requirements in their guidebooks is: "Explain how taking the sacrament helps you renew your baptismal covenant. In a family home evening, teach others about things we can do to remain faithful."  Read the article "All Clean" and the article "Sacred Ground" and discuss with the girls the importance of the sacrament. (See the questions on page 2 called "Things to Think About"). Create a family home evening together that the girls can take home and present to their families. (Serve Bread and Water for refreshments).

Sundaes and Sundays Activities - Read the article "Doing Good on the Sabbath Day" and then make ice cream sundaes with the girls. Make one Sundae using toppings like ketchup, mustard, pickles, bacon bits, etc. and then discuss how all of these toppings are good but not appropriate for an ice cream Sundae. Relate that to how some activities that are great for other days of the week are not appropriate for Sunday.

Music Standards Activity - Pg. 36 talks about the gospel standard "I will only Listen to Music that is Pleasing to Heavenly Father". Let the girls listen to different sounds of music and talk about how the music makes them feel. (Popular Movie Soundtracks are always good for selections.) Have the girls share their favorite music or song and talk about why they like it. Remind the girls to always look at the words of a song to determine if its pleasing to Heavenly Father or not.  Practice a special song that just the Activity Girls can sing in the Sacrament Presentation or a separate sacrament meeting.
